Christmas crime prevention roadshows

The Safer North Hampshire Community Safety team is encouraging people to think about reducing their chances of becoming a victim of crime in the run up to Christmas.

Whether at home or out shopping, there are some simple tips to follow that can help people stay safe.

At home, do not leave presents on display under a Christmas tree, where they will be visible from the road, and ensure large amounts of cash or gift cards are not left around. Make sure windows and doors are locked, and remove keys from sight when leaving the house. Do not leave large boxes advertising expensive new gadgets outside the house until the bins are emptied – take them to the tip instead!

When shopping, always park cars in a well-lit area, and ensure all doors are locked and windows closed. Never leave purchases or presents on display in vehicles.  Do not leave bags unattended while shopping, and ensure purses or wallets are secure at all times. If buying a valuable gift for someone, consider whether there are any additional security products to help keep it safe!

As part of the campaign, the Community Safety team will be holding crime prevention stalls on the following dates from 11am – 1pm:

– 2nd December, Wellington Centre, Aldershot
– 7th December, Hart Shopping Centre, Fleet
– 8th December, Festival Place, Basingstoke
– 15th December, Princes Mead, Farnborough

New gifts and valuables can be  registered on the Immobilise website – www.immobilise.com, where models and serial numbers can be logged, as well as distinctive markings and photographs of the item. Hampshire Constabulary will use this database to help reunite owners with their property.

Cllr. John Kennett, Chair of the Safer North Hampshire Community Safety Partnership, said: “Residents can get very helpful advice at these Crime Prevention stalls. Following simple tips can help ensure we all have a safe and happy Christmas – pass them onto friends and family and stay vigilant over the holiday period.”
