As men in the UK and around the world prepare to celebrate International Men’s Day on November 19, a campaign is underway to ensure men suffering domestic abuse realise that support and help is available.
One in six men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, according to new statistics (Mankind Initiative, Sept 2016) and the issue is being highlighted as one of the UK themes on International Men’s Day.
Mark Brooks, chairman of the charity Mankind Initiative said: “On this international day of celebrating men and boys in all their diversity, we want to highlight the important message that one in six men report that they have been a victim of domestic abuse. For every three victims of domestic abuse, two will be women and one will be male. This is the equivalent of 2.2 million male victims in the UK and 4.5 million women.
“Our message, as International Men’s Day approaches, is to seek help if you are experiencing domestic violence or abuse by calling our confidential helpline. Abuse can range from actual violence or object throwing to mental abuse such as constant bullying or constant insults. We provide both emotional support and practical information, and we receive calls from male victims across all age ranges and professions. Don’t suffer in silence – seek help!”
The ManKind Initiative was the first charity in the UK to support male victims of domestic abuse. It provides a range of services directly to men such as an anonymous national helpline. Calls from mothers, sisters and friends of male victims seeking information are also welcome.
Councillor John Kennett, Chair of the Safer North Hampshire Partnership *, said: “We want to stress to men that they are not alone in experiencing domestic abuse, and this International Men’s Day and White Ribbon Day on November 25 provide an opportunity for people to seek help and end the abusive behaviour.”
