Winter crime prevention tips

With winter ushering in long, dark evenings, the Safer North Hampshire community safety team is urging residents to protect their property and stay vigilant to prevent potential thieves.

Cllr John Kennett, Chair of the Safer North Hampshire* Community Safety Partnership, said: “Whilst we are fortunate to live in a very safe area of the country, it is still important to do all we can to dissuade any opportunist thieves. Adhering to the tips below can help prevent you becoming a victim of crime.”

• Ensure all doors and windows are closed and locked if going out, and leave a light on during the evening if the house is unoccupied – even better, use a timer switch, which turns lights on and off  automatically. These are available from most DIY stores, or by emailing the community safety team using the contact details below.

• Ensure that any side gates are locked which will help prevent access to the rear of the property and any sheds or garages.

• Sheds should be secured with a good quality close shackle padlock, and any outside hinges should be secured with non-return screws or coach bolts. Expensive items such as lawnmowers and bikes should be secured to an anchor point within the shed or garage. You can also consider purchasing a shed alarm for additional security.

• Valuable items should be registered on the Immobilise property register website – www.immobilise.com, where model, distinctive markings and serial numbers are logged, as well as uploading photographs of the item. If an item is stolen and subsequently recovered by the police, they will use this database to help reunite owners with their property.

• Always lock vehicles, and never leave valuables on display. If possible, remove any tools from vans. Try to park in well-lit and secure area. Keep keys out of sight, and do not leave them next to the front door.
